Today I'm going to tell you how to increase the kind of web
site traffic your business really needs...


AND build your crediblity...

AND improve your ranking in the search engines...

AND get your customers talking to others about you...


... all with a simple four-step process that won't cost you
a single dime.

Sound too good to be true? It's not!

Let me give you a quick rundown of the plan before we dive in:


1. You're going to find a handful of keywords that the
ideal visitor to your site would use to search for
your product

2. You're going to plug those keywords into your web site

3. Then you're going to write a SHORT article that
contains those same keywords

4. And finally, you'll distribute your content all over
the web and get people passing your information on
to other people who will be interested in what you
have to offer


You'll be surprised how quickly and easily you can get this
strategy going -- AND how fast you'll see an impact on your
traffic numbers when you put yourself on the radar of people
who are looking for what you provide.

Let's check out the first step in a little more detail...

STEP ONE: Set up your web site for maximum "searchability"!

--------------------------------------------------------

If you haven't taken the time to...


* figure out the keywords your potential customers might
be using to search for your product

AND

* place them throughout the copy on your site


... your traffic is going to be sluggish right off the bat.

How are the people who really want your information supposed
to find you?

When I tell people that they've missed an important step in
their traffic-building strategy, they always ask me: how are
you supposed to figure out the right keywords for your web
site?

Here are the two tools I recommend to help them with the job:


* Yahoo Search Marketing's Keyword Selector Tool
( http://inventory.overture.com/d/searchinventory/suggestion )
is a good place to start your investigation. You just
type in a word or term you think people in your market
might search for, and the Keyword Selector Tool will
tell you how many people searched for that particular
term in Yahoo Search Marketing over the last month.

It will also show you a list of related words and
phrases, and tell you how many times people typed those
terms into the free search engines over the last month.

This is a great way to find out how many people may be
searching for information to solve a particular problem,
and give you a picture of the demand for your product
on the Web. But best of all, it gives you tons of ideas
for keywords that you might never have thought of.


Once you've generated a list of useful keyword ideas, you're
ready to dig in and do some serious research with Wordtracker.


* Wordtracker ( http://www.wordtracker.com ) goes into more
depth to show you not only what people are searching for
online, but also how many other web sites are competing
for the same audience.

Basically, it keeps a record of how many times a
particular keyword or phrase was searched during the
past 90 days across the Web.

When you enter the keyword phrases your market is
searching for, you search the Wordtracker database of
over 330 million searches (or "queries").

You're looking for search terms that are popular, but
don't have too many sites competing for them.

You can also pop all of this detailed information into
useful reports that help you determine which keywords
and phrases will bring you the most traffic.

STEP TWO: Plug your keywords into your site

--------------------------------------------------------

Now that you have some great keywords for your market, find
as many places as you can to plug them into your web site!

Use them in your title tags, in your source code, in the copy
on your pages, and in your opt-in offers.

If you find your domain name isn't telling people what your
web site is about or showing up in the right search results,
consider purchasing a new one.

A keyword-rich domain name is a small investment that really
pays off by making your site easy for your potential customers
to find and remember.

(One quick note: remember to use only keywords relevant to
your product -- search engines will penalize you if they
find keywords sprinkled through your code that have nothing
to do with the content of your site.)

Now to move on to the next step -- your foolproof way to
snag people searching for your product on the Web and bring
them back to your site!

STEP THREE: Create a keyword-rich article to distribute
on the Web

--------------------------------------------------------

When you're ready, get your keywords, sit down, and write
a keyword-rich article that relates to what you sell.

Then give it away to other sites -- for FREE!

Believe it or not, this is one of the best ways you can
drive a steady stream of eager customers to your site.

Why does it work? Well, people basically come online for one
of two reasons: To check their email or to look for
information. Sure, some of them end up making purchases,
but this is not generally the reason they log on. They
want...


* the answer to a question

* the solution to a problem


That's why it's your job to give them that information, as
it relates to your product. You already do that with the copy
on your web site, but why stop there?

Writing a short, informative article to distribute on the
Web is a great way to gain recognition as a valuable resource
in your industry.

Of course, you'll want to write about something that relates
to your products or services, since the ultimate goal of the
article is to drive visitors to your site who are interested
in what you're selling. But the article should be informative,
not "sales-y".

Make sure that each article you write contains rare, valuable,
or hard-to-find information. Not only will this increase the
chances that other site owners or managers will post your
article, it will also increase the number of visitors who click
through to your site after reading it.

For example, if you have a web site that sells used golf
equipment, you could write an article about three things to
look for in a good, pre-owned putter.

Or if you sell an eBook about setting up your own home
computer network, why not write an article about common
problems people have in setting up a wireless router?

Look for article ideas in the questions that people ask you
all the time, or in the things you often see people doing wrong.
Share hot new tips on how to use the products you sell, or
talk about trends that you've spotted in your industry.

I'm not talking about a major essay here, though.

Did I just hear a big sigh of relief? :-)

Nope -- you don't need to be a professional writer to turn
out a solid, traffic-boosting article! Your quick piece
should...


* be no longer than 400 words (not even a whole page!)

* contain a keyword related to your product in first 90
characters

* contain the keyword in the first and last paragraphs

* have a short, credibility-building "bio" with link to
your site at the end. Here's an example: "ABOUT THE
AUTHOR: Joe Smith is a recognized authority on the
subject of widgets. His web site, www. JoesWidgets .com,
provides a wealth of informative articles and resources
on everything you'll ever need to know about widgets."


Now for the fourth step in this traffic-driving strategy.

STEP FOUR: Get your content headed EVERYWHERE on the Web

--------------------------------------------------------

Once you've taken a few hours to write one or two quick
articles, head to one of these top online content distribution
sites. Upload your keyword-rich content to:


* http://www.contentdesk.com

* http://www.ezinearticles.com

* http://www.freesticky.com

* http://www.goarticles.com

* http://www.ideamarketers.com

* http://www.findsticky.com


It only takes a couple of minutes, but the rewards for your
site will be huge.

These sites carry hundred or thousands of articles on a range
of topics. If someone is looking for content for their web
site, they can download or copy an article from the
distribution site without paying a dime to use it!

They can't change the text of the article, and they must
publish it with the author's name and information intact.

Now people who are plugging your keywords into search engines
will be directed to your content at these highly-ranked sites,
and web site owners who are looking for fresh, search engine-
attracting content will download your article -- along with
your bio and link! -- and put it up on their pages.

And once visitors see that you know what you're talking about,
they'll click on the link in your bio, and head straight to
your web site!

The best thing about this strategy is that these visitors
are QUALITY, TARGETED traffic -- they actually WANT what
you're selling, because you are meeting a need or giving them
help with the problem they came online to solve!

Some content distribution sites also offer "send to a friend"
links next to articles posted on their sites -- so make sure
you're uploading your articles to sites with this kind of
capability!

Every time someone enjoys your article enough to pass it on,
your audience grows. And since people don't forward BAD content
on to their friends, they are basically recommending you as a
credible source just by passing it on.

You can also create a "send to a friend" link on your own web
pages with the help of a simple script added to your code.
Here are some examples of what this kind of link might say:


* "Did you enjoy this article? To recommend it to a
friend, click here..."

* "To pass this important info along to a friend or
family member, click here..."

* "Share this with a friend -- just click here..."

* "Can't wait to tell a friend about this? Here's how..."

The visitors who come to your site through articles or
forwarded material are highly targeted... and likely to take
action when they actually arrive at your web site seeking your
specific information.

Final thoughts

See how much you can do with one little article?

It's amazing how effective a small piece of content can be
when you...


* know your keywords, and...

* know all the places to position that content so it's
viewed again and again


Once you've done your keyword research, you might feel a bit
intimidated by the idea of writing something yourself for
the 'Net. Or maybe you don't feel like you have the time to
do it justice.

Remember -- any free content you create shouldn't be too long,
and it definitely shouldn't be too complicated, since the
people reading it won't know your product or your subject as
well as you do.

If you're still concerned, you can always hire a writer from
a freelance web site like Elance ( http://www.elance.com )to
do a couple of short articles or an eBook (with a bit of basic
information from you, of course.) Expect to pay anywhere from
$25 to $35 an hour for their time.

But I recommend that you try to write something yourself
first. You definitely don't need to be a professional writer
to create something readable and interesting... (I sure don't
have a degree in creative writing myself!)

Just try to think like your audience -- what do they want to
know, and how much do they know already? Then tell them simply
and clearly. We're not talking Shakespeare here.

Here's one more quick peek at my easy four-step plan to
increase web traffic:


1. Find the keywords people are using to search for your
product

2. Make sure all the content on your web site contains
these keywords!

3 Write short, keyword-rich articles with links directing
people back to your site -- nothing too long or
complicated; just enough content to establish you as
someone "in the know" about your industry

4. And finally, send your article to content distribution
sites and -- with just a simple suggestion or a script-
based link -- encourage people to pass your material on
to their friends (and direct them back to your site!)


These simple steps are things that practically anyone can do
to drive traffic. They'll help you get the kind of targeted,
quality traffic that can make all the difference to the
success of a business, especially when you're just starting
out!

In other words, these are the types of visitors who are most
likely to take action on your site, whether they make a
purchase, or simply opt in with their personal information.

And I don't know about you, but I'll take more of those
visitors any day of the week!

Compelling Articles Make Great Content

Writing Articles

Articles are excellent tools to generate web traffic and
product interest. Writing articles, may sound easy enough,
but it is important that you write the proper types of
articles to attract interested readers. Follow these simple
steps to create compelling and interesting content.

Compelling Titles

Think of article titles as news headlines. They must strike
a chord with the reader and encourage them to read on.
Article titles are the writer's opportunity to grab the
casual web browsers interest. Consider using a play on
words or slightly modifying a common phrase to make the
reader pause. Use a provocative title. Consider making the
the title a question, and the article the answer. Questions
are particularly useful as an article title because readers
are naturally curious and will be enticed to read more.
Titles can also be calls to action.

While it is important that titles be compelling, they
should also not lead the reader astray. The title should
relate to the general subject of the article.

The first letter of each word in the article title should
be capitalized for emphasis. Articles should not only be
thought of as educational tools, but also a benefit to your
search engine ranking. With that in mind authors should
include relevant keywords in the articles title.

Examples of compelling titles:

Content is Queen
What Are The Newest Technology Trends?
Learn The Secret To Windsurfing

Types of Articles

Articles that are timeless have the longest shelf life.
Consider "How-to" articles or instructional articles that
explain common questions in simple terms. Authors should
always keep in mind that the types of articles that tend to
be the best received contain useful original content.

Articles that are portrayed as educational articles should
not be infomercials, but should contain objective
information and tips that will genuinely assist readers.

Keep It Real

People will not be impressed by complex sentences that make
little sense. Readers are looking for relevant information.
Focus on topics that allow you to provide concrete helpful
information.

Article Length

The ideal length for articles that are to be syndicated is
between 600 and 800 words. If you have some content that is
considerably longer, break it into a two-part article.

Proof Read

Articles that are embraced by publishers are well-written.
Like it or not, grammar and punctuation do matter. The
quality of your writing will impact how the content is
received. Double and triple check for typographical errors
and incorrect grammar usage. Edit each article for spelling
and grammatical errors. Typos reflect poorly on the author.
Regardless of whether the information contained in the
article is accurate, articles that are poorly formatted or
include spelling errors, will be quickly discarded.

Article Formatting

The article should be written in such a way that it can
easily be broken into small paragraphs, making it easy for
readers to skim. Small paragraphs will also increase the
article's overall readability. Each paragraph can include a
mini-keyword rich title that will highlight the information
contained within that paragraph. A bulleted list,
highlighting important points, is another way to draw
attention to a specific section of an article.

Archive Articles

All articles should be archived onto a stable and
persistent webpage. Each article should have it's own page,
and the page should be optimized for keywords related to
the contents of the article.

Resource Box

Use the author resource box to show expertise in a specific
area. The author resource box should include the article
author's name, company, web address and any call to action
items that relate to the article contents.

As I travel through the Google search engine, there is one
element that defines almost all of the top-ranking websites. It's
great content. People come online for information and those that
offer the best content reap the greatest rewards.

Unfortunately, this type of content is hard to come by. In most
cases, you either have to spend hours in front of the keyboard or
outsource the job to others. Both of these options are very
costly. One requires your valuable time and the other requires an
investment of around $10 - $20 per article.

That's why I have scoured the net in search of valuable free
content sources. I'm still not quite sure why I'm revealing my
treasured piles of free content, but I certainly hope you enjoy
them.

One of my favorite sources of content is public domain. This
comprises the body of knowledge without a copyright. Anyone can
use this material for commercial or non-commercial purposes.
Below are some excellent sources for public domain material.

Project Gutenberg

Project Gutenberg is a library of 18,000 free ebooks whose
copyright has expired. "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes",
"Pride and Prejudice", "The Time Machine", "The Adventures of Tom
Sawyer", and "The Canterbury Tales" have all passed into the
public domain.

This means that you can put these on your website or even sell
them in electronic or book format.

Explore a wealth of free content at http://www.gutenberg.org


Archive.org

At Archive.org you can find thousands of works that are currently
in the public domain. Want to put some cartoons on your web site?
Check out the "Film Chest Vintage Cartoons", which is full of
classic animated cartoons from the 1930's and 1940's. The
collection includes Popeye, Porky Pig, Bugs Bunny, Woody
Woodpecker, The Three Stooges and Betty Boop.

They also provide tons of other reproducable content including:

Brick Films: Commonly called "LEGO Movies". Brick films are
dedicated to the art of stop motion animation.

SabuCat Movie Trailers: The world's largest collection of
theatrical trailers.

Feature Films: A large number of classic feature films and
shorts.

Universal Newsreels: Newsreels were shown before every
feature film in the pre-tv era.

Computer Chronicles: Was the world's most popular television
program on personal technology during the height of the computer
revolution.

Net Cafe: Television series covering the revolution during the
height of the dot com boom.

All of these content sources are available for you to put on your

Another popular public domain destination is Wikipedia.org. Here
you will find over 1 million articles ranging from Greek
mythology and Egyptian history to business, health, and
technology.

Go to http://www.wikipedia.org for a huge collection of articles
you can reprint on your own website.


Creative Commons

Every creative work receives copyright protetion as soon as you
put pen to paper, hit save, or press record. Because of this, no
one can use that work without express permission from the author.

Creative Commons provides a new content license that allows you
to share your work with others. If you want, you can even allow
other people to expand upon your existing work. This allows for
creative co-authorship.

The Creative Commons license has made piles of content available
for use on your web site. Whether you are looking for audio,
images, video, or text, you can find an abundance of reusable
information within the creative commons.

Government Web Sites

Works produced by the U.S. Federal government are not
copyrighted. If you obtain a government document from the net,
you are free to copy and distribute the document. I have found
plenty of great content about finance, retirement, health,

Article Directories

There are thousands of writers on the internet and many of them
would love for you to reprint their articles on your website. You
can find thousands of free web articles at the following article
directories.

Interviews

I consider interviews to be one of the best sources of quality
content for your site. Simply interview industry professionals
and post the recording and transcript on your website. This
allows you to create original content very quickly.

Don't be afraid to ask for an interview, most experts would be
delighted to speak with you. Remember, this is probably one of
their greatest passions. If you ask them politely, your chances
for landing an interview are good.

You can conduct an interview in person, over the phone, or even
through an e-mailed questionaire.


RSS Feeds

RSS is changing the way we consume information online. In
addition, it has also provided thousands of new content sources
for the online publisher. RSS is simply a file format similar to
XML that is used by publishers to make their content available to
others in a format that can be easily understood by web
publishing software and content aggregators.

By using RSS feeds, you can enhance the content on your site
without ever writing a single word. And remember, on the
Internet, content is King.

Want to put Amazon products on your site, updated news from the
New York Times, financial advice from Motley Fool, or press
releases from PRWeb?

This is all possible with RSS. No matter what type of information
you are looking for, RSS can provide you with a constant stream
of updated content for your web site.

territories, and dependencies. Each profile tracks such

encyclopedia's ever written was published over 90 years ago.
Search over 40,000 articles, all of which are available for
publication on your own site.

Private Label Articles

Private label articles can be bought for pennies per article.
This is possible because they are sold in bulk.

Many people criticize these articles and have declared them as
worthless. However, I am here to tell you that private label
articles can be very powerful when used appropriately.

Unless you have hours of free time every day, it is unlikely
that you are going to be able to create the amount of quality
content that your web site deserves. This is where private label
content enters the picture.

You can use private label articles to:

* Add content to your web site.
* Acquire hundreds of inbound links by syndicating the articles
to article directories.
* Create a free report for your visitors and other website
publishers.
* Create an information-packed RSS feed.

However, the key to using private label articles effectively is
to optimize them. Straight out of the box, these articles are
near worthless. To give them value, you must add your own touch.

Inject your personality into the article. Combine multiple
articles and do some additional touch-ups to ensure that the
article is in top shape for your readers.

you could put a discreet ad in your sidebar or link
to your partner's products.

2. Promote someone else's products in your newsletter
or blog for a percentage of each sale: Your
"advertisement" could simply be a link and a bit of
salescopy, or it could written as a detailed product
review. Whatever works best for your market!

3. Build credibility through third-party endorsements:
Get to know the experts in your field! Send them free
samples, if possible, so they can become familiar with
your product. Give them a chance to be impressed by it!

Then, if they like what you've got to offer, ask them
for a personal testimonial endorsing your business. In
exchange for their endorsement, you can offer them
increased exposure and publicity -- because their name
and business will be put in front of YOUR visitors!

You might even consider given them a small percentage
of your sales. If their endorsement directs a big
enough swarm of customers your way, it'll probably be
worth it!

And that leads us to our next strategy...

4. Capitalize on your OWN good name: If you're known as a
respected expert in your field, people are going to
value your opinion and listen to what you have to say.

So if you come across any products or services your
customers might like, why not contact the businesses
that sell them and offer to give them an endorsement in
exchange for a small fee or percentage of each sale?

Not only will you boost your revenues, you'll get
increased exposure and be able to spread the word about
your business to your partner's audience, as well!

Finally, one of my favorites...

5. Buy the reprint rights to someone else's product:
When a company has a product like a book or a video
that they've been selling for a while, they may be
interested in extending that product's lifespan by
looking for ways to introduce it to fresh new markets.

This creates a great opportunity for you to get your
hands on a well-established, successful product you can
offer to your own customers.

When you buy reprint rights, you get all of the files
and documents you need to reproduce the product --
and you'll often get a tested and proven salesletter
as well.

So, all you have to do is put up the salesletter and
start collecting orders!

Best of all, you get to keep 100% of the profits!

Those are just FIVE of the ways strategic alliances can help
you SERIOUSLY ramp up your profits.

But there's no limit to the ways you can establish mutually
profitable relationships with other businesses.

You could even go all "old school" and enter into a barter
agreement with another business!

For example, if you're a great writer, but can't build a web
site to save your life, you could partner up with a design
team who could build your web site FOR you.

In exchange, you could write their salescopy for them. That
way you both get what you need -- without any damage to your
bottom line!

Or, if you had a gap in your skill set and you found someone
whose expertise filled that gap, then the two of you could
team up to create a BRAND-NEW product you could BOTH sell to
your customers, then split the profits 50-50!

And that brings us to our next "win-win" business arrangement...

Let's say you're a building contractor who sells do-it-yourself
eBooks on how to build your own house addition.

Your customers have told you time and time again that they're
desperate for advice on how to make sure their new additions
don't stick out like a sore thumb.

They want to know things like how to blend different building
materials or create seamless transitions between the addition
and the original house. In short, they're looking for exterior
design information.

But YOU can't help them, because you don't know SQUAT about
design!

So here's what you do...

You partner up with a reputable designer and work together to
co-author an eBook that combines YOUR construction know-how
with your PARTNER's design skills... and then sell that
product to your customers and split the profits right down
the middle!

Not only that, your partner could then offer her offline
services through a link on your web site, in exchange for YOU
getting a cut of every sale!

Not bad, huh?

Joint ventures may take a little more effort than strategic
alliances... but when you partner with the right business,

a year -- with a little help from his friends!

Richard Grady started out online selling novelty items on

Thanks to the Internet, finding a suitable business partner
is now easier than ever. All it takes is a bit of research
and creative thinking.

Here are some tips to help you get started...

1. Start your hunt with the free search engines: Pretend
you're a customer and run searches for the kind of
information your market is trying to find online.
Then look at the results that come up.

Which listings are for businesses that are trying to
sell something to your market? Check them out! See which
businesses offer competitive products, and which offer
complementary ones.

Take special note of sites that belong to the second
group -- they may become your future business partners!

2. Record your first impressions. As you explore the
businesses that sell to your market, jot down your
initial thoughts about their sites. Which ones seem the
most professional? Which did you want to spend the
most time exploring?

THOSE ONES are the winners!

Remember, the average Web user spends only 10 seconds
checking out a web site before deciding whether or not
it's worth a closer look. And if YOU don't think a site
is worth exploring, neither will your customers!

3. Use the Alexa Toolbar to give potential partners the
"once-over.": The Alexa Toolbar
( http://download.alexa.com/index.cgi )is a cool free
tool you can use to discover all sorts of killer
information about a web site.

You can find out how long the site's been up and
running, how much traffic it receives, and how many
other sites are linking to it. You can even read user
reviews!

If the site's been around for a few years, has lots of
steady traffic, and has a good number of sites linking
to it, then it's a great potential business partner.

4. Don't forget to look offline for partners: Are there
any "brick and mortar" businesses you could partner
with?

For example, if you sell real estate advice online, is
there a particular real estate agency you could refer
your customers to, in exchange for a fee?

Or maybe you run an online restaurant directory. Maybe
you could get local restaurants to advertise your
directory -- in exchange for a mention in it, of
course!

5. Contact potential partners personally -- and be
PROFESSIONAL: A phone call or face-to-face meeting is
FAR more effective than an email.

Live contact helps you establish a personal relationship
right off the bat. Potential partners will take you far
more seriously, and you'll be able to answer all their
questions on the spot -- and make it harder for them to
say "No"!

Just make sure you come to the table with a strong
argument! Clearly explain EXACTLY how they would
benefit from a relationship with you.

If you can't present them with compelling evidence that
PROVES you can help them increase their profits, why
should they bother doing business with you?

The bottom line is, BE PROFESSIONAL. The better you present
yourself to your potential partners, the more eager they'll
be to do business with you!

When you're running an online business, you ALWAYS have to
be on the lookout for ways to add new streams of income to
your site. And one of the BEST ways to do this is by

Maybe your child's teacher's husband runs a business selling
products that appeal to your target market. Or maybe your
neighbor's wife is a consultant whose services your customers
are ALREADY clamoring to buy!

Who knows? Your next joint venture partner could even be the
guy you see waiting at the bus stop every morning! His skills
and expertise might dovetail perfectly with your own -- and
you just don't know it yet!

7 Lessons in Successful Self-Employment from "Weeds"

I have a new love -- and it's not a man or a house or a
car. It's an edgy Showtime television suburban satire,
"Weeds", in which Mary Louise Parker plays a widowed soccer
mom, Nancy Botwin, in a fictional subdivision of Los
Angeles called Agrestic. Nancy struggles with the sudden
death of her husband from a heart attack and agonizes how
she'll support her family in their upper-class lifestyle.
Not having any discernable job skills, Nancy discovers the
lucrative income in being the local neighbor pot dealer.

The show is quirky, irreverent, and raunchy. The
dysfunctional family dynamics are hysterical, especially
when her unemployed pot-head brother-in-law, Andy, arrives
on her doorstep. Her interactions and affection for her
supplier, a black ghetto family headed by matriarch Heylia
James, and Heylia's unwed pregnant daughter and
ne'er-do-well son, Conrad, are a stark contrast to her
daily life in Agrestic. And, the broad social and
political statements that are constant undercurrents in the
series are really just right on the money.

This show is a big shift for me -- I'm probably the only
person my age who's never done any type of drug -- so
admitting I love a show about a pot-dealing suburban mom is
strange, I admit. What's most fun for me to watch is
Nancy's development as a entrepreneurial businesswoman
who's going to do what it takes to be the most successful
weed dealer in Agrestic. There's not alot of difference
between Nancy and me in the quest to build successful
businesses, except that my business is legal, of course,
and I don't have to dodge bullets in drive-by shootings at
my supplier's house.

Here are some great lessons on building a business from
suburban pot mom Nancy Botwin:

1. Fish where the fish are. Due to her friendship with her
accountant, Doug Wilson (played by Kevin Nealon), and his
group of friends, Nancy quickly realizes that Agrestic is a
wonderful market for her product. She finds a great source
of pot and is easily able to sell it, as her upscale target
market is eager to buy and can easily afford her prices.

Lesson: Know your target market. Are they male or female?
What age group? What industry? What socio-economic
group? Where do they hang out on- and off-line? What do
they read? To what groups and associations (real and
virtual, personal and professional) do they belong? How
much money do they make? Can they easily afford your
product or service?

2. It's all about benefits, not features. Doug discovers
a cheap source of medical marijuana in a clinic in LA and
thinks he's discovered a gold mine. However, in order to
use the clinic, he has to get a prescription for medical
marijuana from a shady physician and then drive an hour
into the city every time he needs a refill. Nancy offers
him the opportunity to buy the same stuff locally, without
the drive, and no prescription needed.

Lesson: People do business with you because you can help
them solve a problem. They care little about how you solve
it (the features of the solution). They just want you to
make the problem go away so that they have one less thing
to worry about (the benefits of doing business with you).

3. Understand the needs of your target market. Nancy
takes a trip to LA to check out the medical marijuana
clinic, and discovers a sheer cornucopia of pot, available
in more varieties than she'd ever imagined. This visit
makes her realize that she's buying the
bottom-of-the-barrel weed and gives her supplier a list of
the "good stuff" that her clients really want. Then, to
give her clients a better high for their buck (and enable
her clients to hide their marijuana use), she begins to
package the pot in various baked goods that she makes in
her home kitchen. One client cleans her out of baked goods
in one visit.

Lesson: Give your clients what they want, not what you
think they need. Many service business owners head into
the marketplace and have no idea if they offer a product or
service that the public wants. Or, they offer what they
think is good for a client rather than what will solve a
client's pressing problem. Do your market research to
understand the needs and problems of your target market.

4. The failure of most businesses is due to
undercapitalization. Nancy's personal expenses are
exceeding her income, and she approaches her supplier,
Heylia, to give her inventory on credit. Heylia laughs in
her face, but after Nancy begs, she's permitted to hock her
leased Land Rover and multi-carat wedding ring with Heylia
to get the quantity of pot that she needs for the week.

Lesson: Being self-employed is a financial roller-coaster
ride. Have financial reserves in place before you start
your business so that you can pay your bills until you
begin making a profit. And, if you come up short of cash,
try negotiation with your suppliers or vendors for more
favorable payment terms.

5. Slow and steady wins the business growth race. Nancy
becomes heady with her sales success in her suburb and
begins to eye other markets so she can make even more
money. While on the local college campus seeking a tutor
for her son, she realizes the campus is a ready-made market
for pot and is initially very successful in capturing that
market. However, what she doesn't realize is that she is
treading on another dealer's territory (one of the campus
security officers), and in a mock arrest on campus by this
officer, she loses about $15,000 worth of inventory. When
she tells Heylia what happened, Heylia just laughs and
tells Nancy she's been "jacked" by another dealer, and
that's the price she pays for trying to grow too fast.

Lesson: Great success in your business will make you want
to conquer the world. However, quick expansion without
proper planning makes many a business owner go belly-up.
Plan for the growth of your business, and include that
growth in your business plans and vision statements so that
it's a natural evolution of your business.

6. To be successful, you need your family's support. Nancy
tries to be an "moral" pot dealer and refuses to sell to
children, or permit anyone working for her to sell to
children. In the same vein, she tries to shield her
children from the true nature of her business, not wanting
to set a bad example for them (see the irony in this
series?). However, secrets are hard to keep from
teenagers. In an act of rebellion, Silas, her 15 year-old
son, tells her he doesn't have to follow her rules any
longer, throwing in her face that she has no right to tell
him what do to since she's selling pot. When she tells
Andy, her brother-in-law, about the situation, Andy tells
her that Silas is just angry with her because she has lied
to him about how she's making money.

Lesson: Deciding to run your own business can be the
quickest road to divorce or family alienation. Keep your
family updated on what's happening in your business,
especially if you run a business that's going to keep you
away from them on an ongoing basis. Family rules,
structure, and expectations may need to shift for awhile,
and the more that you family can be a part of creating that
change, the healthier and happier you all will be.

7. The Lone Ranger didn't ride alone. As Nancy reviews
her life lessons in entrepreneurship during Season 1, she
realizes that it's hard work running a business by herself.
She invites her accountant and attorney (two of her best
clients), her brother-in-law, another dealer, and son of
her supplier to go into business with her and help her grow
her territory and make it all work.

Lesson: You're great at the core service you provide to
your clients, but you can't be good at everything, nor
should you try to be. Create two lists, one of what you
love to do, and the other of what you hate to do. Do what
you do best (and love to do) and delegate the rest to your
support team. Spend your time more profitably looking for
opportunities rather than wasting it on tasks that you can
hire out much more cheaply and efficiently than by trying
to do it all yourself.
