Basic Marketing Dope

Sometimes the simplest data is the best. Marketing is not
complex if you know the basics - that's true with anything by
the way. Here are some tools that are brilliantly simple and
with them you really won't have to sweat the small stuff.

Hot Dope #1) The more that your potential customers see your
name in front of them, the more likely they are to call your
number (and not someone else's) when they need the services you
offer.

Many marketing efforts go unrewarded, not because they were off
target but simply because they weren't given enough of an
opportunity to work. Showing your TV commercial one time,
running an ad in the newspaper once, or doing one mailing of
postcards may not be enough to grab and keep the audience's
attention.

Get your name out there, do it on a regular basis and people
will remember you when they need someone in your line of
business. Actually, this particular "Hot Dope" cannot be
stressed enough - and failure to adhere to it is the #1 reason
new businesses fail.

You should also know that taking the time to really see which
pieces will generate the response you want will pay off. Don't
just totally give up when a response is low - persistence is
vital.

Hot dope # 2) Measure your Return On Investment (ROI) in terms
of actual MONEY not response rate. An advertising vehicle is
working when the MONEY that it brings in has more value than
the MONEY and time that is spent on the marketing.

Don't fall into the trap of becoming discouraged by a small
number of callers responding to a large number of pieces. If
you spend several hundred dollars to be in the view of a few
thousand possible leads, it may only take a few customers
responding for you to make enough of a profit for this type of
marketing to be valuable. The usefulness of any vehicle can
only be determined after the amount of income generated by the
promotion has been calculated. If you spend 1/5 of what you
generate or generate 5 times what you spend, your campaign was
successful.

Hot dope #3) It is much easier to "sell" a prospect once you
get them to call or come in to your store. In 2-Step Marketing,
step 1 is to get them interested; step 2 is having them speak to
a representative to get all the details - and get "closed" by
that representative.

Your design must be eye catching and informative, but don't try
to close the sale by explaining all of the details in one piece
of advertising. The details of a business transaction often
take many more words to explain than the main concept of what
is being sold. For example, if your company offers great prices
depending on the quantity purchased, there is no need to list
the prices for every quantity that you sell. Simply give
examples of two or three different quantities and state
somewhere in the advertisement that other discounts are
available for other quantities. This will prompt them to call
to get the rest of the details once you have gotten their
interest.

Marketing can be as simple as 1-2-3 when you know the basics.
By no means have I given you all the basics here, but by
learning and implementing these 3 marketing fundamentals, you
are already on your way to marketing success!

How To Avoid Spam Robots

Despite the fact that Federal legislation (the CANSPAM act)
made it illegal, harvesting email addresses from the web
using automated robots remains alive and well.

Spammers who need fresh email addresses release software
spider programs that comb the Internet and suck email
addresses off Web pages, guest books, and anywhere else you
might post your email address.

Once they get your email address, spammers will trade it
around like 5th graders with a new pack of Pokemon cards at
recess and you can expect the avalanche of email to begin
flooding your inbox.

In order to combat this still rampant practice of stealing
email addresses from websites and sending people email they
don't want, the following tips should help protect you.


** Break It Up **

Obviously the best way to avoid getting picked up by an
email harvester is not to post your email anywhere on
anyone's website (including your own).

If the only way someone can get your email is if you give it
to them, that creates a similar situation to operating with
an unlisted phone number.

If telemarketers can't get your phone number, they can't
call.

If you must post your email address, post it in a way that a
robot won't recognize it as an email address. Instead of
posting YOURNAME@YOURDOMAIN.COM, you can put YOURNAME (AT)
YOURDOMAIN.COM and then, in parenthesis, put (replace AT
with @ to email me).

Though it seems like an extra step for legitimate email,
you'll find it a very effective technique.


** Use An Image **

Currently, online spiders (ANY spider, including search
engines) cannot read text that appears in a graphic or
picture. If you must display an email address on a page,
then do it by typing your email address into your favorite
graphics program and saving the image as a .gif or .jpg.
Then post the image onto your web page so people can see the
email, but spiders cannot. This too creates an extra step
for people because they must type in your email address, but
it's an effective solution if you must display an email
address on your own website.

** Use An Email Form **

Another way to cut down on spam originating from your
own website is simply not to display an email at all.

Instead, allow customers and prospects to contact you
through a form where they fill in fields, click a button,
and your website emails you their message.

A note of caution: make sure the form script you use does
not keep your email address visible in the form code.

If the form code contains the email address, spam robots can
find it even though you don't see it on the page.


** Make It Hard To Guess **

Sometimes you'll get unsolicited email because a spammer
guessed your email address.

It's not a far stretch to imagine that someone probably has
the email Jim@yourdomain.com, so spammers will do a
"dictionary" attack on common usernames.

One way to defeat this is to place a "dot" (.) in your email
address, such as Jim.Edwards@yourdomain.com. The dot makes
it virtually impossible for spammers to guess your email
address.

While writing my book, Confessions of Shameless Internet
Promoters, I contacted dozens of Internet marketing experts from
around the world. During just one hour via e-mail I had written
to and received e-mails from all over the US, Canada, Mexico, the
UK and Australia. That is five countries around the globe in
just ONE HOUR. The power and the access to the world is now
available to all of us at lightening speed.

Here's an example of how the amazing power of the Internet can
find endless opportunities:

A year ago I had a client in Australia that was in search of
another speaker like myself who is an expert in marketing and
retail, but that lived in Australia.

Since I live in Phoenix, Arizona US, I did not know a soul in
Australia, much less a great speaker in the same niche market
and the same topic of expertise my client was looking for. But,
following my motto to "Never Throw Business Away", I set out to
find my Australian client a dynamic expert that lived in her
country.

First I did a search on Yahoo - Australia. Since my site comes
up very high on the search engines and directories when typing in
the keywords retail speaker, I was surprised that another speaker
appeared first on the list. John Stanley - who is this John
Stanley I thought. I clicked onto his site and viewed it in great
detail. I had discovered that I had some tough competition on the
other side of the world. Not only was John an expert in retail,
he was the perfect fit for my client. So I sent him an email with
the client's contact information. Now you may be thinking, why
would you send your client to your competition?

Here are 5 BIG reasons why:

1. My client would have found this speaker on her own doing a
search on the Internet or by contacting a Speakers Bureau anyway.
So, why not be the hero and help out the client at the same time.

2. Servicing my clients is first and foremost on my list of
priorities. I take ordinary service and turn it into
extraordinary results. This is easy to do, just stop selling
and start servicing and you reap amazing results.

3. My clients are pleasantly surprised that I would not only
refer them to a competitor, but that I would take the time to
personally introduce them. My referrals are often sent in the
form of an email (first choice because it is quick, easy and
effective), personalized letters or one on one in person.

4. Business will comes back to you many times over when using
this method effectively. I have personally experienced this for
years in the many different businesses I have owned. Most people
are afraid of their competition and therefore avoid them. This
builds up a wall around you and a competitor who happens to have
the same core customer base as you do. Don't' fight 'em - join
'em! Build alliances and send them business. It is a win-win
for everyone involved!

You service your customer, help out your competition and they in
turn will most likely turn around and help you back. Note: If
after sending numerous referrals to my competition with no
reciprocating action, I simply stop sending the referrals and
find another expert competitor that is willing to trade referrals
fairly.

5. People like to do business with people that they like, and
they like people that treat them fair, honesty and who truly care
about making personal connections and offering supportive
service. That's just good business!

And now for the rest of the story ...

When I sent my newfound competitor, John Stanley my clients
contact information, I never knew if I would her back from him
or not. And I did not know that he would want to reach out
instantly and help me back. At the time I was just helping a
client in need. But, John returned with an email to me within 24
hours. John thanked me for the referral and mentioned that he
would be in Arizona, just 20 minutes from my home in two weeks.
He said he would give me a call when he arrived. Now what are the
chances of this happening with someone I just met via the
Internet from the other side of the world?

A couple of weeks went by and the phone call came. John was in
town and wanted me to stop by where he was presenting to meet
and chat up a bit.

We chatted up a bit all right - two hours later of not stop
chatting we had discovered more and more ways to refer one
another. During our conversation, John told me he had to confess
to something that he could not tell me via email or by phone.

"Just two days before I got your email, I did a search on Yahoo
and found Debbie Allen. I thought, who is this Debbie Allen and
why am I not coming up first on the search engines under retail
speaker? So I went onto your site and discovered your
expertise. I thought, this lady is some tough competition on the
other side of the world. They I printed out a couple pages from
your Web site. Those pages were sitting on my desk when I got
your email!"

Wow! Makes the hair on your arms stand up, doesn't it? What
are the chances? The chances my friends, for this type of
opportunity to happen to you, are endless now with the World
Wide Web. Oh yes, and if that is not enough to convince you
to do more marketing via email and passing on referrals to your
competitors, let me share with you what happened with those
referral leads.

John and I have shared many contacts and created business
opportunities in many countries including the US, Australia,
New Zealand, Canada, Singapore, UK and Africa. We have even
presented together on the same platform in England and were
dubbed the "The Ginger Rogers & Fred Astaire Of The Speaking
Business". In addition, John has become one of my most successful
distributors and resellers of my books in his part of the world.

DON'T EVER THROW BUSINESS AWAY AGAIN! Seek out,
connect and refer your clients to another expert if you can't take the
business for some reason. Become the resource for referrals and
connections - the Internet Rolodex. When passing business along
make sure that you keep yourself in the referral loop. Send an email
introduction to your client with a copy to the person you are
referring so that they can see the contact was made. Pass on all
the contact information for the referral. Then wait for it to
come back around to you with TONS of personalized referrals and
increased business.

My 7-Step Secret Formula For Cashing In On Content!

Content, content, content - everybody's talking about it!
Are you lucky enough to have a ton of content - maybe from
an ezine you've been publishing for years?

Then realize this: there's a right and a wrong way to put
content online. The wrong way creates a large content site
that doesn't DO anything except sit there.

But if you do it the right way? You'll have a MASSIVE
content site that makes you MONEY. Day in and day out.

I've developed a "secret formula" for clients with a ton of
content. It's based on creating a money-making SEO
"wrapper" for their content pages. This wrapper includes
classic SEO "triggers."

While this formula won't get you on page one for a pile of
keywords, it WILL help push you to the top of results pages
for highly targeted searches. Here's how you do it:

#1 - Build a simple template-based site that's 100% search
engine friendly.

By simple, I mean pared down HTML code. Avoid a lot of
nested tables, use minimal graphics, and NO javascript
menus or applets. If you have no design sense, today's web
designers are more search engine savvy. Just shop around at
scriptlance.com, and you can get good SEO design for
$50-$100.

#2 - Add "SEO reminders" to your template.

Plug some mock-up copy into your layout, then break it up
with one big headline (your H1 tag in the HTML), and two or
three subheadlines (your H2 and H3 tags in the HTML). Add
the word "KEYWORD" in BIG letters to each. Also add similar
"SEO reminders" to SEO-critical HTML code, especially the
Title and Description.

#3 - Start plugging ALL your old content into your
template, 300 words per page.

Why so few words per page? You want a LOT of pages on this
site! If the articles are longer than 300 words, simply put
a "continued" link at the bottom, and start another page.
When you get to 30 pages or so, stop.

#4 - Get a one-day Wordtracker account, and grab a bunch of
relevant and related keywords.

Say your articles are on personal finance. Use
Wordtracker's "Thesaurus" tools to collect tons of related
keywords, like money management, investment, debt
management, etc. Grab a boatload of keywords - thousands if
possible.

#5 - Go back and fill in your "SEO reminders!"

Scan your keyword lists for relevant search terms to
replace those "KEYWORD" reminders in your Headers and HTML
tags. Don't stress over it, just use one keyword or
keyphrase per page.

#6 - Make a good navigational structure for your site, then
apply to Google Adsense or another contextual ad program.

Once you're approved, get those ads on EVERY page you've
built so far. If you're allowed to display multiple ad
units, put at least two on each page.

#7 - Add just 3 articles to your site each week... plus
those money making ads! Repeat... and cash the checks!

To be realistic, this strategy won't make you "number one"
for popular terms. That requires "true" SEO, which costs
thousands per month!

But by "wrapping" your content in search engine friendly
code, adding those search engine "triggers," and MAXIMIZING
the content pages... your search engine exposure builds and
builds.

The more pages you get online, the more ads people will
see. And those ads will be spot-on RELEVANT because of the
detailed content on your pages.

Lots of pages = lots of ads.
Lots of content = lots of relevancy.
Lots of relevancy = lots of clicks.
Lots of clicks - lots of money!

Finally, you need EVERY component of the formula to make
this strategy work. Pages, content, relevancy, and clicks -
that's the secret to making your content pay big time!
